Rockedrømmen Chapter 17
My record labels and releases
An English retelling from Kjell Moberg's manuscript.
I started small labels to release our own music and keep control of the work. Hate You Records became October Party Records, and the project grew from punk singles and albums into compilation series and a large, volunteer-led effort to present Norwegian artists in China.
My first steps came from necessity. Punishment Park had released a CD under its own name, and Hate You Records followed with the 1995 Blendwerk cassette. I made small runs, split singles and a compilation with Andy Kline’s DHMG. The point was independence: choose the music, make the decisions and learn the work as I went.
I changed the name to October Party Records after my two children, both born in October. The label released Punishment Park and Jef records, promotional CDs and Punk in Disguise compilations. In 2006 Kang Mao and I extended it into Beijing: Bergen Rock City and Norwegian Wood compilations travelled through Chinese music magazines. The project eventually reached 22 compilations before we reduced the label's activity and returned our focus to our own work.
